Seed to Sales

Seed to Sales is our Flower Farmer and Farmer Florist community, based on a passion for all things floral and a knowledge that starting a cut flower business – whether you are an experienced grower or a novice, can be an overwhelming enterprise.

We are Jo (Wye Valley Flowers) and Rozanne (The Ledbury Flower Farmer). We recognise that being a flower farmer and an entrepreneur can sometimes be a lonely path. Learning new skills, keeping up with tasks, juggling childcare or maybe you still have a day job you are not ready to leave –  it is exhausting. There always seems to be lots of jobs left on the to do list each week and whilst we can’t make that list any shorter, we can share tips and skills to make you more productive and offer shortcuts and inside knowledge to help you (and your business) flourish.

Jo says ‘you just don’t know what you don’t know when you start out’. Whether that is choosing flower varieties with good vase life, calculating the cost of sales and getting stem pricing spot on, creating a varied palette of colours and textures across the year, understanding the legislation of selling to the public, keeping accurate records to monitor your best crops, developing an effective marketing strategy or finding your perfect customer.

We have put together a cost effective, structured course which takes you on a journey over one growing season to gain more confidence as a grower, create space for a work life balance, stay on top of business admin and network with other growers.

We have been running workshops, supporting other growers together and we are excited to share our knowledge and experience with you.

About Jo

Wye Valley Flowers

Jo worked part-time as a florist in her 20’s but took another path into university, business and finally teaching. However, she never lost her passion for growing and has been running floristry courses, using homegrown flowers and farm-foraged foliage for 13 years – alongside teaching sustainability at university.

She is a third-generation flower farmer and has spoken at conferences, featured in magazines and recently appeared on television with Claire Balding. She is an award-winning florist based in a beautiful village between Gloucestershire and Monmouthshire, growing on sustainable principles, with no pesticides or chemicals.

She has just doubled the size of her no-dig flower farm having secured contracts to supply nearby Gloucester Services with 100s of bouquets a year. There is a small florist shop on the farm, as well as a packed calendar of 40 workshops a year and wedding work. Her plot can be challenging due to springs and is situated at 800’, mostly green clay but also loam and largely exposed.

About Rozanne

The Ledbury Flower Farmer

Rozanne graduated in Rural Environmental Protection from Harper Adams and worked as a gardener, before establishing her flower farm. Based just outside Ledbury in Herefordshire, near her family dairy farm, Rozanne offers a sustainable option of local produce for local people. She says

‘Flowers in many ways are no different to food. It’s important that people are able to choose a more sustainable and environmentally friendly option without having to compromise on quality’.

Rozanne has also appeared in several magazines. Her flower farm grows on heavy clay. She sells her flowers for weddings, wholesale, pyo, floral workshops and local retail including a local market.

Together

Jo and Rozanne had the privilege of supplying some of the flowers used either side the thrones in Westminster Abbey for the Coronation of King Charles. They have collaborated on several workshops for cut flower growers, including their sell out ‘Introduction to Growing Cut Flowers Day’. They have spoken on the Potting Shed stage in the main flower tent at RHS Malvern together. Both enjoy working with other growers, selling their flowers to event florists through a cooperative flower hub. Jo and Rozanne are proud members of Flowers from the Farm and hold the Regional Coordinator posts for the South West and West Midlands, respectively.
